The Pleasure of Nature
A Summer Camp Lesson
The Pleasure of Nature with Brittany
"When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.” -John Muir
Nature Journal - Nature journals are used to record our observations of the natural world. Many of the supplies we used were repurposed materials like cereal boxes or old homework. Encourage your child to use their nature journal to record drawings, words, or sentences about the natural world around them - weather, plants, animals, rocks, dirt, etc.
Leaf Rubbing Artwork - Pick a live leaf from a plant in your yard. Place under a piece of paper and hold it down while using a color pencil or charcoal to rub the design on the paper. Be sure your leaf is not poisonous!
Stormy Weather - Students will generalize that humans and wildlife share environments and experience some of the same natural phenomena via a simulated field trip to experience a storm.
Technology Connection - Download the iNaturalist App for your phone!
Learn About Nature: Build your knowledge by talking with other naturalists and helping others. Keep Track: Record your encounters with other organisms and maintain life lists, all in the cloud. Create Useful Data: Help scientists and resource managers understand when and where organisms occur.
Continue at Home - Go on a wildlife treasure hunt! This is a treasure hunt to look for evidence of wildlife. BE CAREFUL NOT TO HARM ANY ANIMALS OR THEIR HOMES. Find evidence in your backyard or at the park that:
Humans and wildlife share the same environment
Humans and wildlife must adjust to their environment
Wildlife is all around even if it is not seen or heard
Wildlife can be many different sizes
People and wildlife experience some of the same problems
Both people and wildlife need places to live
